My Aussie friends cannot quite get their heads around what happened a couple of nights ago. They are not very familiar with football. They are used to much more crude and "down to earth" sports such as rugby and AFL, in which players usually kick and punch the sh*t out of each other (without complaining) but, in the end, the best team always wins. That doesn't always happen in football I am afraid. The Italians know it very well as they were booted out themselves by the Koreans for an injust ref's decision four years ago. I know it is a harsh way to lose but this is also the beauty (and cruelty) of this beautiful sport. The Australian team played at the best of their capabilities but, in the end, let's face it, their best wasn't good enough. The Aussies themselves are, by tradition, sore losers. So, as you can imagine, they didn't take this defeat too well. Even so, they never went as far as the Italians went four years ago in accusing FIFA of a conspiracy...

Siamo arrivati nel cuore dei Mondiali 2006 e noi lo stiamo ancora aspettando. Lo aspettavamo agli Europei del 2000, lo aspettavamo ai Mondiali del 2002 e lo abbiamo aspettato agli scorsi Europei, quando si rese si’ protagonista ma non grazie alle prestazioni in campo bensi’ ad un atteggiamento da lama (e sia chiaro che non intendo il Dalai). In questa Repubblica di nani e ballerine, di magnacci e magnaccioni, di reali e buffoni di corte, di prepotenti e impotenti, di veline e donne senza veli non si finisce mai di imparere. Dopo la prima partita con il Ghana, quest’anno avevo davvero creduto (sperato?) che fosse la volta buona e che l’Italia, nonostante Moggiopoli e porcherie calcistiche varie, fosse entrata nel Mondiale con lo spirito giusto. Mi sono dovuta ricredere quasi subito. Ancora una volta abbiamo commesso l’errore di sottovalutare gli avversari (anzi, di sopravvalutare noi stessi) ed abbiamo non solo fatto fare agli Stati Uniti (gli Stati Uniti!!) la figura del leone, ma abbiamo fatto anche una gran figura di m**da sotto gli occhi di mezzo mondo grazie alla gomitata rifilata da De Rossi a McBride (3 punti di sutura). Thanks to the generous package offered by Port of Melbourne we ended up living in a beautiful 2 bedrooms apartment on the 34th level of Eureka Tower. The apartment has a 250 degrees view over the City, mountains and bay. Eureka Tower, located in popular Southbank, is currently the tallest residential building in the world, with 302m height and 92 levels, and one of Melbourne’s ambitious achievements. Its design is contemporary, innovative and quite spectacular. Facilities include a private fully equipped gym, a 25m indoor pool, 3 saunas, a private cinema and an observation deck. The lifts can reach a speed of 3 levels per second, which means that often you need to undertake some serious decompression exercises by the time you get to the 30th floor! On the 26th of January I was offered a secondment to Port of Melbourne Corporation to work on the huge Port Phillip Bay Channel Deepening Project. Accepting the job would have meant leaving Brisbane and moving down to Melbourne for at least 6 months. Needless to say that, after consulting Julian, I decided to accept the offer. Not only both Julian and I had reached a saturation point with Brisbane (too quiet, too slow, too...boring really), but this job opportunity would have meant also getting away from the boring mining projects I had been working on, leaving in one of the most exciting cities in Australia and, last but not least, earning an awful lot of money! In Australia non ci sono solo bestie aggressive. L’Australia e’ un Paese affascinante sia dal punto di vista geologico ma, soprattutto, da quello ambientale. Un esempio su tutti: qualche anno fa e’ stata scoperta, per puro caso, in una parte piccolissima della foresta pluviale, la specie piu’ vecchia di antiche mai registrata nella storia della scienza ambientale. Life of Pi is the book that won the French-Canadian Yann Martel the 2002 Men Booker Prize. It is a very popular book. If you haven’t read it yet, do so. It is an enchanting story about a young Indian boy who is cast adrift in a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutang, a zebra and a huge Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Pi’s journey is full of fascinating survival scenes, witty sense of humour and beautiful metaphors. This is a story where faith and science clash but also co-exist at the same time. It is a tale about mortality, faith, human determination and the power of nature. Yann Martel proves to be a great storyteller, blending facts and fiction in a beautiful fable that challenges you to believe the unbelievable.

My family (my mum, dad, sister and sister's boyfriend) arrived in Australia on the 20th of December 2005 to spend the Christmas holiday with us and left nearly three weeks later. Together, during that time, we explored Brisbane, the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island (the biggest sand island in the world), Moreton Island and the Gold Coast. We all agree it was one of the best holidays of our lifetime. What made it really special was the stunning beauty of the scenery, the endless fun, the harmony reigning amongst us and, of course, the beautiful Australian climate. A very unusual but special Christmas (Santa here rides a surf instead of a sleigh!) which, I am sure, no one of us will ever forget...

Una delle cose che ha colpito nel profondo me (essendo arrivata prima) e Julian sin da subito e’ stata sicuramente la flora ma, soprattutto, la fauna della regione. A parte i popolari canguri e koala, c’e’ una vasta gamma di mammiferi, ucelli, rettili ed insetti che nessuno conosce e dei quali, all'estero, nessuno parla - fatta eccezione per qualche articolo in “cronaca nera”. Per esempio, quanti sanno che le dieci specie di serpenti piu’ velenosi al mondo vivono tutte in Australia?!?! Guardando su una scala piu’ larga: dei 25 serpenti in cima alla classifica di pericolosita’, 21 albergano nel territorio australiano, in particolare nel Queensland. Le cose non migliorano quando si parla di ragni: se pensavate che la citta’ fosse piu’ sicura del “bush”...scordatevelo! Sydney, per esempio, e’ la patria del Funnel Web Spider (Atrax Robustus).
